“Here it is, it is up there!” Michelangelo Buonarroti,
seems like to point to the place where he has found the matter that
will became a work of art. The marble, white, shining, has always been
passed through these paths coming from the North of Tuscany, through
the quarryies populated by legendary personages, through the ancient
artisan shop of sculptors and stonecutters.
The paths of marbles come down from Mount Altissimo, descend into Carrara,
the world-wide capital of marble and quarryies,
and go down to Versilia on the opposite slope , the land of the great
artistic traditions.
The route starts from the Apuane Alps as far as Forte
dei Marmi beach, where, in the past, the draught-oxes
drawn marble blocks, which came loaded on sailing-vessels, passing through
Stazzema, Seravezza and Pietrasanta, the artist and the artisan shops
city, where the marble takes its shape, but not only: this is also the
city of artistic foundryies. We are going to talk about it in the chapter
dedicated to the “Art in Versilia”.
